For the last year and a half the administration and teachers of Village Leadership Academy (VLA) have been preparing to roll out the Transcendental Meditation (TM) Quiet Time program sponsored by the David Lynch Foundation. VLA is a pioneering school in bringing this specific meditation tool to Chicago students. The program successfully rolled out at Village Leadership Academy’s Upper School (4th-8th grades) this Fall. Due to program guidelines, VLA Lower School students (K-3rd) have the opportunity to practice TM once they matriculate to the Upper School.
We would like to consult a full-time yoga instructor to provide the Lower school students (Kindergarten-3rd) with yoga and meditation as a tool and early intervention strategy to work toward mastery of the 5 core competencies of Social Emotional Learning(SEL) (Self-Awareness; Self-Management; Social Awareness; Responsible Decision Making; Relationship Management).
To make mindfulness and meditation a consistent school-wide practice and an integral part of our school culture and curriculum, we would like to teach yoga to the Lower school students. The Life Skills instructor will incorporate the VLA Pillars of Justice (Kindness; Curiosity; Empathy; Respect; Responsibility; Citizenship; Trustworthiness; Positive Action; Fairness; World Leaders) and the 8 foundational principles of yoga into each class to teach students how to master the 5 SEL core competencies.
Yoga is a mindfulness technique that is age appropriate and engages both mind and body. The practice of yoga will also create a natural transition into learning and practicing Transcendental Meditation once students graduate to the Upper School campus.
